Phyllis Jean Aikmus

Phyllis Matlock Aikmus, 86, passed away on April 28, 2014 at her daughter, Gail Gavin’s home in Platte Woods, Missouri. She was born on January 24, 1928 in Fillmore, Missouri to Edna and Charles Matlock. Phyllis grew up in Fillmore, Savannah and Parkville Missouri. She graduated from Parkville High School where she enjoyed basketball, cheerleading and all types of school activities. After high school she attended business college and upon graduating she worked for Chrysler Corporation in the Fairfax District of Kansas City, Kansas. Phyllis married Roy E. Aikmus in 1951 in Parkville Missouri and had four children during their 16 year marriage. Roy’s career took them to Clinton Oklahoma and Memphis Tennessee. Always outgoing, Phyllis and her four children seemed to make a happy home and many friends wherever they landed. After Roy’s death in 1968, Phyllis and family returned home to Kansas City. During this time, Phyllis took up golf and it quickly became a passion for her and her kids. A member of the former Mirror Lake Country Club, Phyllis was a natural athlete who could hit the ball straight and was a “killer” shot around and on the green. Phyllis enjoyed returning to work after her children left home and spent six years with Park College before moving to Mesa Arizona where she lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and Bill Miller. The 3 Musketeers enjoyed lots of golf, travel and leisure time over the years with friends and family. She also enjoyed her work with the Mesa Multi-Generational Center and the many friends she made. Everyone who knew Phyllis understood that her family came first in her life. She loved being a mom and later a grandmother and great-grandmother. Her frequent quote, “Nothing has given me more pleasure in life than being a mother.” Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Janice (Frank) Miller of Scottsdale, Arizona; her sons Tom (Shari Roberts) Aikmus of Liberty, Missouri; Greg (Rene) Aikmus of Kansas City, Missouri and daughter, Gail (Jerry) Gavin of Platte Woods, Missouri. Eight grandchildren, Jennifer Penner, Sean (Jill) Aikmus, Suzanne Aikmus, T.R. Aikmus, Alyx Aikmus (Ross Bartrom), Tom Gavin, Cory Aikmus, Christen Gavin and Erin Gavin. Three great-grandchildren, Avery Aikmus, Amelia Aikmus, and Leo Bartrom. Nieces and Nephews, Melinda (Gary) Perry, Penny Easterwood, Rex (Debbie) Miller, Bob (Paula) Miller and Kris Miller. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Charles Matlock; and her sister, Loretta Miller. A celebration of Phyllis’ life will be held a later time.
