John Eckermann

John Joseph Eckermann, 62, died peacefully Thursday April 9, 2015 at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo, in the company of his brothers and sisters.Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Friday, April 17, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 919 NE 96th St., Kansas City, MO with the Very Rev. Philip Egan officiating. Visitation will be Thursday April 16, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Souder Chapel, 1333 NE Barry Rd, Kansas City, Mo. Committal service will be at St. Peters Catholic Church and Cemetery in Cosgrove, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday April 18, 2015, followed by a gathering for friends and family at St. Peters Parish Hall until 1p.m. John was born May 6, 1952 in Iowa City, IA, the son of Louis J. and Imelda F. (Menke) Eckermann. After graduating from Regina HS in Iowa City, IA, John attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa and was a member of the football team. John served in the Iowa Army National Guard, 209th Medical Co. John’s professional career for the past 25 years was with American Airlines. John enjoyed spending time with family especially attending his step grand children’s school activities and sporting events. John’s stories about life experiences at gatherings of family and friends always provided much laughter and good times. John had a big heart and was always there to provide support for those most in need and made sure the little people in his life had lots of fun and love. John was a longtime supporter of organizations benefiting children and pets.The Eckermann family is appreciative of the compassion and care provided by the nurses and staff at St. Luke’s Hospital and the support of his co-workers at American Airlines. Surviving family members include his mother Imelda Eckermann; sisters, Jeanette Yeggy, LuAnne Brown, Mary Kay Eckermann, and Angi (Joe) Reinbold; brothers, Chuck (Mona), Doug (Anne), David (Patty) and Rick (Celia) Eckermann; step children Jennifer Hague and Sam and Stephanie Alperin; step grandchildren Zachary, Dylan, Sophie, Ashley, Franklin and Jacob Alperin and Taylor and Gavin Wilson, and 16 nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his father Louis J. Eckermann and his grandparents Charles and Genevieve (Norris) Eckermann and Aloysius and Rose (Dingman) Menke, and niece Amber Yeggy.
